Waiting to See If You're Pregnant
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
I am very anxious to find out whether I am pregnant or not. Are there any symptoms that a pregnant woman may notice before she misses her first period that could be signs of pregnancy?

Dear First Timer,
The feelings of early pregnancy are pretty much the same as the feelings you have late in the cycle when you are not pregnant. Some women notice that their breasts are more tender than usual, and some have a small amount of bleeding a few days before the period was due, which signals implantation of the embryo into the uterus.

That said, most women cannot tell they are pregnant until after the period is late. It is so exciting to try to get pregnant that it can be very difficult to patiently wait those few days to see if the period starts. But rest assured once you are pregnant, you will know within a few weeks, and you will have nine months (and then many years) to experience and enjoy the miracle.
