When Sperm Production Starts
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Needlman,
I have a 13-year-old son, and was hoping you could tell me when males begin producing sperm.

— Charlene

ANSWER
July 23, 2001
Dear Charlene,
Teenage boys begin making sperm about the middle of puberty, at an average age of 14. (Actually, the sperm have been "in the works" since early childhood; but they become mature and are able to result in pregnancy around age 14.) About half of boys start earlier, and half somewhat later, depending on whether they are early or late maturers. Usually about this time they become aware of ejaculations, and generally show an increased interest in sex.
