Ask Dr. Jana

Breast Milk Storage
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Jana,
How long does breast milk last in the refrigerator?

— Pam in Brooksville, Fl.

ANSWER
March 12, 2001
Dear Pam,
The standard recommendation is that breast milk (when refrigerated) stays good for up to 48 hours. If you suspect that you won't be using the breast milk within this time frame, you should consider freezing the milk and thawing it when you intend to use it. Also, remember that once milk has been offered to a baby in a bottle, any remaining milk in that bottle should not be stored and needs to be discarded since it is likely to be contaminated with bacteria.
