Safe Formula Temperature
QUESTION
Dear Ms. Silva,
How long can infant formula stay out at room temperature?

— Bill

ANSWER
July 11, 2001
Dear Bill,
This is an important question to ask since babies are quite vulnerable to food-borne illnesses. Most formula manufacturers recommend that formula not be left at room temperature for more than an hour, after this bacteria grow quickly and can make your baby sick with diarrhea and/or vomiting.

More precautions should be taken when the room temperature is high or when the milk is outdoors in hot weather. In these cases babies should be fed formula that has been stored in a refrigerator or an insulated bag with frozen gel packs. After the feeding, the remainder of the formula should be thrown out.
