Dear Jackie, The simple answer to your question is yes--you can supplement your breastfeeding with formula feedings when you return to work. As you establish your new breastfeeding routine, your body will simply adjust and make enough milk to satisfy your baby's new needs.
In terms of actually doing it, there are a few things to be aware of that can make the transition smoother. If you don't pump when you return to work, your milk supply will decrease. Following the simple concept of supply and demand, your body will start to produce less milk over the first days and week after you start supplementing. If you start introducing formula before your actual return to work, it will give you a chance to slowly decrease the number of daily breast feedings. If you experience fullness, leakage, or even pain (of engorgement) that can result from a decrease in feedings, you can either nurse your infant or express just enough milk to relieve the symptoms while still in the comfort of your own home.
You should also consider introducing a bottle and formula now so that you aren't faced with a dilemma if your baby decides she is not so thrilled with the change the day before you have to go to work. If she gives you a hard time, you can try different nipples, and even have someone other than yourself feed her (since she may hold out for you in hopes of getting to breastfeed).
Best of luck for a smooth return! by Laura Jana, M.D., F.A.A.P. |
