Ask Dr. Greenfield

Right Time of Month to Get Pregnant
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
What time of the month is the best time to get pregnant?

— Nancy

ANSWER
February 20, 2001
Dear Nancy,
A woman's fertile time occurs around 14 days before the start of her menstrual period. If you have 28-day cycles, this is around day 14. If you have 23-day cycles, this might be as early as day 9, and if you have 35-day cycles, this could be as late as day 21. If your cycles are irregular, the best time to get pregnant can be difficult to predict. Ovulation detection kits can help identify your most fertile period. For more information, see our articles on trying to conceive and on ovulation detection kits--and I hope that you soon have happy news to report to your family and friends!
