Urinary Tract Infections in Pregnancy
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
Hello. I am two months' pregnant and I have a urinary tract infection. I would like to know if it is safe to take antibiotics during pregnancy, in particular the drug Macrodantin. Could you also suggest some other methods to cure UTI during pregnancy? Thank you.

Dear Bugs,
Your healthcare provider tests for bacteria in the urine because urinary tract infections can have serious consequences in pregnancy, such as kidney infection and preterm contractions. It is definitely safer to take the antibiotic than to leave the infection untreated. You may be able to prevent infection by drinking lots of fluids, particularly cranberry juice, which contains an acid that gets into the urine and inhibits the growth of bacteria. But once an infection is present, antibiotics are the best treatment.
