Ergonomic Baby Bottles
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Jana,
What is the safest and most ergonomic baby bottle for newborns?

Dear Shopping Sister-In-Law,
As far as I know, there are no safety issues for newborns when it comes to the baby bottles currently on the market. While I am not aware of any huge advantages of one baby bottle over the other, I can give you a couple of simple, practical considerations.

First of all, many new parents find it more practical, both for feeding and storing, to use a four-ounce bottle until their baby is old enough to drink more than four ounces at a time (which for a newborn may be several months down the road). If you are shopping for your sister-in-law, you might consider getting her a bunch of four-ounce bottles for now, and the eight-plus-ounce bottles for later.

Since you sound ergonomically inclined, the bottles with angled tops are designed to be easier to hold--both for parents and for infants as they begin to hold their own bottle. The design also helps limit the amount of air infants suck up. They come in both the smaller and larger size.

That said, the plain old upright bottles do work just fine as long as you think to position them vertically (upside down) so that there is always fluid in the nipple, not air, while the baby is drinking.
