Six-Year-Old with Painful Urination | | | QUESTION | | | Dear Dr. Cates, About two months ago, my six-year-old son began having a little pain during urination and then afterwards two to three drops of blood would come out. His doctor said that it was probably a sore inside the penis that is irritated by urination (there was no blood found in the urine). Two months or so has passed by now and he is still having the same problem. I'm getting very worried. His doctor is now referring us to a urologist. What do you think this could be?
Kristi8007 in Atlanta, Georgia | | | ANSWER | July 22, 2002 | | | Dear Kristi8007, I'm sorry to hear your son is having these problems. You are right to keep looking for a diagnosis because this is a problem that most likely will need specific treatment. One of the most common causes of painful urination is a urinary tract infection, which can be treated with antibiotics. Although urinary tract infections can cause the urine to be bloody, it is unusual for the blood to come out after he has urinated. Certainly a sore inside the penis is a possibility, but I would also want to check and see if he has stuck something inside his urethra (the tube that the urine passes through).
Unfortunately, I can't tell what your son has without examining him and performing some tests. It sounds as if his doctor has done the right thing by referring him to a urologist. This specialist should be able to determine what is causing the problem and offer appropriate treatment. by Lynn Cates, M.D., F.A.A.P. |
