Kawaski Disease
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Cates,
My two-year-old was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease a few months ago. Although he has completely recovered with no signs of heart damage, I am wondering if all cases of the disease are reported to the Centers for Disease Control for tracking by the infectious disease doctors that took care of him at our local hospital. I didn't know if this was something they are supposed to do, and if these folks could give me more information on the number of cases in my area. Thanks so much.

Dear Kawasakimom,
I am delighted your son has completely recovered from his episode of Kawasaki disease. Your question is a great one, but unfortunately there is no requirement for reporting Kawaski disease so the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) doesn't have complete information on when and where cases occur.

However, since most children with Kawaski disease in any given geographic region are seen by the same teams of specialists, you may be able to learn more about the prevalence of this condition in your area by speaking with the infectious diseases or cardiology doctors who cared for him.
