Breastfeeding with Breast Implants
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
I have breast implants and would like to breastfeed. I am due in November. Is this not a good idea?

— Alison in Dave, Florida

ANSWER

Dear Alison,
Since implants are placed beneath the breast tissue, they don't usually interfere with breastfeeding in any way. Even the old silicone implants seem to be safe, and newer saline implants also pose no problem.

The other question I often get asked is related to breast size. Most breasts, even those that were small enough for the woman to want implants, can successfully feed a baby.

I hope that this answers your questions. Good luck, and congratulations!
