Getting Enough Nutrients after Weaning
QUESTION
Dear Ms. Silva,
Hi. My daughter is almost 10 months old. She has decided to wean herself from my breast. This experience is new to me since her sister nursed until she was 16 months. My question is what can I do to ensure that she gets the appropriate amount of nutrients that she needs? Is there anything other than putting her on a formula that we can do? She eats very well. She drinks from a sipper cup. She weighs 19 pounds. She takes a vitamin, which is prescribed by our pediatrician. Thanks for answering my question.

Dear Mia,
It sounds like your daughter is developing well and has a mind of her own. At this age it's difficult for an infant to eat enough important nutrients including calories, iron, calcium, and sometimes protein by only eating solid foods. Vitamin/mineral supplements can provide enough extra iron and calcium but not calories or protein. Over time she may not gain an adequate amount of weight for proper development.

There's also the question of what she'll drink for adequate fluids. Drinking excessive juice may lead to loose stools. You haven't said why you'd prefer to avoid formula but you might think about using an infant soy formula. Consult your pediatrician for more information specific to your daughter.
