Braxton-Hicks Contractions at 18 Weeks
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
I'm 18 weeks pregnant. Is it too early to feel Braxton-Hicks contractions?

— Trinasir in Bronx, NY

ANSWER

Dear Trinasir,
Many mothers-to-be feel cramping or contractions throughout pregnancy. Unfortunately, it can be hard to tell if this is really a sign that preterm labor is threatening to start or, as you say, just Braxton-Hicks contractions. In general, contractions a few times a day are normal, and contractions a few times an hour need to be assessed.

The best approach is to talk to your doctor or nurse-midwife. She can listen to your description of what you're feeling and, if necessary, can assess your cervix with a physical examination or ultrasound.

I hope that this answers your questions. Take care.
