Making Love While Pregnant
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
How do we know if the baby is OK when we make love?

— Butterfly in United States

ANSWER

Dear Butterfly,
A lot of people worry about the baby when they have sex in pregnancy. But you can relax--the baby is quite protected in your uterus, cushioned by amniotic fluid and barricaded in the uterus by a closed cervix and the mucous plug. Sexual practices that do not hurt you should not hurt the baby, and if you and your partner are both in the mood, you might as well take advantage of the peaceful time together!

If you or your partner has further concerns or questions, you might like to read the articles on sex and pregnancy posted on our website. Also check out information about sex in our section on the Fathers' Pregnancy Experiences in Sex with a Pregnant Partner.
