Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Pregnancy
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
My hands and feet are swollen. I'm 17 weeks pregnant with twins. I'm not a doctor, but I'm pretty sure that I have carpal tunnel and have been wearing splints on both hands every night to bed. Is there anything else that I can do? Also, does this get worse before it gets better?

Dear Hurting Hands,
It does sound as if you are experiencing the miserable effects of carpal tunnel syndrome, which is fairly common during pregnancy. I urge you to discuss your situation with your healthcare provider to see what she recommends in your specific case.

Carpal tunnel syndrome usually subsides after delivery, at least so you can look forward to that.
