Prenatal Vitamins
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
I am currently trying to get pregnant. What is the difference between prenatal vitamins and my regular vitamins? My vitamins have the recommended 400 mcg. of folate. Do I really need to pay for the high-priced prenatal vitamins? If not, can you recommend a good OTC vitamin?

Dear Kristi,
You are thinking along the right lines. The most important vitamin for a woman to take while trying to conceive is folate, and 400 micrograms is the recommended dose. The best multivitamin for you is one that has the recommended amount of folate, is inexpensive, and doesn't upset your stomach. The one you are taking sounds fine!
