Flu Shots If You're Planning to Get Pregnant
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
My husband and I are about to try to get pregnant. I know I should not get a flu shot, but what about my husband--it is safe for him to get one?

Dear Laura,
There is no evidence that flu shots are unsafe for pregnant women after the first trimester. In fact, they are strongly recommended after the first trimester or before you get pregnant. Discuss with your practitioner if you should get one while you're menstruating, just to be sure that you're not yet pregnant. Your husband should have no reason not to get a flu shot--and one extra reason to get one: If you decide not to get a flu shot now, at least he won't give you the flu while you are pregnant!
