Vitamins causing nausea
QUESTION
I am nine weeks pregnant and my prenatal vitamins are making me very sick to my stomach. I started taking my boys Flintstone chewables® but noticed there was aspartame in the ingredients. Is that still ok for the baby and am I getting enough folic acid? I don't want to put the baby at risk, but is there anything else that I can do or take?

Small amounts of aspartame are probably safe in pregnancy. That said, Flintstones® vitamins do not have enough folate for you. Most importantly, you need to take 400 micrograms (0.4 mg) of folic acid which is available as an over-the-counter supplement. If you want to take an additional vitamin, Flintstones® or an adult once-a-day or prenatal vitamins are fine. You should discuss the options with your practitioner.

You can find related information in our folate supplement article, as well as in our article about healthy eating during pregnancy.
