SUBJECT: 2 1/2 Year-Old Daughter "Exploration"?
Ok, I'm sure we're just being paranoid parents and we've pretty much convinced ourselves that this is totally normal behavior but here's the thing: This evening our 2 1/2 year old daughter was playing with her dad and she began "humping" his knee while on his lap. I didn't see it and it was his description. He became instantly uncomfortable and put her down but she appeared frustrated and kept trying to get back into his lap until he finally just got up. To make it worse, we were at another family's home with other children around. He says he's observed her doing this is objects around the house such as a large plastic ball that she just balances on while lying on her stomach and rolls back and forth with the ball between her legs and touching her pelvic area. Again, I've noticed her balancing on the ball but never seen her overtly rubbing herself on it. Everything I've read seems to indicate that this is the age for self-exploration and assertion, so I'm not terribly worried, but I don't know how to address it with her. She also attends a day care and I intend to ask if she's been doing anything like that there. I feel that we should begin explaining things to her (age appropriately of course) about sexuality and the need to do those things in private. I just don't want her to feel badly or think that it's wrong or bad. Due to her age, we're confused about what to say or do. Any suggestions?
