I adopted my son last year at age of 4. I was told right away that he was add and to think about medicine for him. This past year in Kindergarten, the teacher told me he was ADD and to get the meds and I refused. I did try the diet issue and eliminated the dye RED 40 out of his diet and it really did work. It could have been a mental thing where I told him it would work and he made it happen but all I know is it did work to a certain degree. His grades went up and so did his self esteem. This year now will be first grade and I (single dad) know that I can't eliminate every bad ingredient out of his diet so I reluctently went to the Dr. this past week. I was given Strattera in sample form and so far it seems to work. He's not a zombie and is still as energetic but is focused. His weekly reading teacher (also his K teacher) noticed right away that he was so into his work and he did well. So far, as reluctant as I was, I have to say that this "drug" is doing it's job. It's not a stimulant like the first one was we tried. Concerta. It made him fly all day and all night. He didn't sleep for over 9 hours after his initial bed time. I'm still going to do food eliminations from his diet but not as strict as before. You can check out the diet issue on a website called www.feingold.com Talks about dyes, preservatives ect.... Pretty nasty stuff !!! Noah never had a sleep issue as far as I knew and know. He can sleep whenever he wants to. He just lays down and he's out. He does talk in his sleep tho.
Good luck.
