Children bite because they don't have the words to say what they want or need to say. Your day care providers should explain to this "biter" that his behavior is not appropriate and they should encourage him to "use his words."

As the mother of a child who has been both "biter" and "bitee" I can appreciate your situation. This is common behavior at this age and is not a reason to pull your child out of day care. Nor, is it fair to ask them to remove the other child from the class. Instead, they should focus on correcting the problem. They should also keep the names of the "biter" in confidence and simply report when a child bites or has been bitten. This will help alleviate any tension that may arise between the parents.

As the child's vocabulary increases the biting should subside.
