 | My folks were both natural lefties. My dad, till the day he died...my mom, until the nuns got to her. I went to Catholic school, too -- and those nuns didn't change between her time there and mine (I was a leftie beforehand, too). I was never quite sure why my folks didn't speak up -- but I think it was more because that was the way it was done then than anything else...
The funny thing is, they missed ALL of the other lefthanded behaviour with me -- they just concentrated on the writing (the prevailing theory then being that it would make it easier to learn to write that way). So I still use scissors, eat, sew...just about everything else...lefthanded.
I volunteered at my kids' school, and when my son was in 1st grade, there was a young lefty in his class. I was blessed because I had my dad's example when learning to do things. This boy's parents were both righthanded.
It was interesting -- the teacher was ready to "help" him be righthanded...with the idea that this would make his life easier in the long run. The boy's mom was also the mom to one of my daughter's friends -- so I asked her if she'd mind if I tried working with him. I couldn't ground him handwriting-wise very well -- but I made sure he was comfortable with it. I was able to help with everything else though...
His older sisters were both lefties...and his mom told me later that having someone who could SHOW him made a real difference -- he was able to learn things much more quickly.
