SUBJECT: 16 Month Old Resists Naps
Dear Experienced Parents:

My 16 month old daughter has a difficult time taking naps. I breastfed her since birth and she would nap during the noon time feeding. However, at 12 months of age we began to wean from breastfeeding and the only way she would nap was if I drove around in the car.

At her 15 month well-baby visit our Pediatrician encouraged me to start putting her down for naps and let her cry, (of course I would check on her after 5/10/15 minutes). I have been trying this for the past 3 weeks with no success. Today, she cried/screamed for 2 hours- no exaggeration!

Fortunately at night she sleeps from 7:30 PM to 5:30/6:00 AM. We are concerned because without a nap she is noticeably tired and fussy. We worry that she is not resting enough for her optimal growth and development. By the way, we are down to just the night time feeding.

So getting her to sleep at night without breastfeeding is coming up and my husband and I are not looking forward to her screaming herself to sleep.

We hope you have some ideas!
