SUBJECT: Nail problems...help!
Awhile back I damaged one of my fingernails which caused the nail to be separated from its bed. Ever since, it was never "quite right". It started turning whitish/yellowish. I went to the doctor back in the winter/spring sometime for this and she wrote me a prescription for Penlac Nail Laquer to treat nail fungus. It is applied topically. It has a pregnancy category code of B which means that it was safely tested on pregnant animals, but has not been tested on pregnant women. I talked to my obgyn about using it (I have stopped ever since I found out that I was pregnant). He seemed to think that it would be fine to use, but I am still hesitant. If it had a pregnancy category code of A, I would feel a lot better (tested on pregnant women with good results). However, my doc said that there aren't any drugs with this category code because no women want to test these drugs while pregnant and the drug companies don't want to do it either. What made me really hesitant though, was the documentation that Penlac issues. It says not recommended for pregnant women. I asked the doc about this and he said that this is basically their disclaimer. Again, he felt that it would be fine to use. I really want to get this nail cleared up before it really develops into something ugly. Has anyone tried or heard or any safe drugs to use for this problem? Help!
