| I am now on my second child with reflux. It was a nightmare for my daughter (my first child) and for us. She screamed for 3 months before the doctors finally put her on Tagamet to help her. I knew what the problem was and they tried so many different things before finally giving her Tagamet.
My suggestion to you is that if the symptoms are not getting any better, or are getting worse, your son probably needs a slightly higher dose of Zantac. It's really a trial and error situation to find out what works for him.
I kept calling the doctor to check in every few days and if things didn't seem much better, I'd have them increase the medication. They normally start with a low dose, and based on the child's size, etc., they will probably be able to increase it. When my daughter started the correct dose of Tagamet, she was like a different baby within 3 days or so.
Things should be getting better for him and it's such a shame that so many babies suffer from this condition and people shrug it off as "colic". I just hate that word!
I believe that if a baby is crying incessantly or seems uncomfortable more than they are comfortable, there is a problem. It is up to us as parents to speak for our children. They rely on us to keep them healthy.
Kudos to you for keeping on top of things and helping your son to feel better. Shame on those parents who allow their children to go on feeling uncomfortable and doing nothing about it.
Good luck and remember that it should be a temporary condition. My daughter grew out of it and is a perfectly healthy 4 1/2-year old. I'm looking forward to my 4-month old son growing out of this, too! :-) |
