 | Hello, we moved from Canada a few years ago and this has given me time to really compare the 2 systems. I have found many problems in the school system here (suburban Chicago) and I can honestly say it is quite inferior. I don't want to start an argument over which country is better but realize Canada continually outscores the US in every school area. Recess or lack thereof is near the top of my list. My son always had two 15 minute recesses and an hour lunch of which at least half was playing outside. Now that does not exist and I have noticed many problems since he needs to burn off this energy. He also has to be at school for 7:20! This is unreasonable for an 11 year old who needs at least 8 to 9 hours of sleep. He never had to be at school before 8:30 in his life. There are numerous other problems that make this school system much worse including 'zero tolerance' policies on simple discipline issues, lack of school notebooks (everything is on loose leaf handouts), not enough focus on core competencies (spelling, writing and general neatness), too much rote learning, too many days off, the school year is a full 20 days shorter and the teachers are severely underpaid compared to Canada making them bitter and prone to moving on. |
