 | My son, Nick, who's 14, is a complete basketball fanatic. This year, he played on the regular winter league at school, then on another league in town (we live about a hour from town), then on ANOTHER league in town (but this one was through the school). Now he's playing on an adult league at our health club.
He runs cross country in the fall and track in the spring -- but only to keep himself in shape for basketball.
I am beginning to know player names and stats, I am following games with him (college, NBA, etc.)... heck, I have even started keeping the stats book or running the clock at games! (I go to EVERYTHING, you see, and the coaches all know I'm a pushover.
The thing is, I'm willing to go to all this trouble for several reasons.
1. I have something that I can talk to him about -- that he's WILLING to talk to me about.
2. Talking to him about basketball gives him a chance to let his knowledge show through, gives him a chance to legitimately know something that he can expound on to me...and it's a major boost to his self-esteem.
3. Basketball is keeping him safe. He's at a point where it's important to keep his body "clean" -- so he's not interested in drugs, in smoking, in drinking. For that alone, I would drive him all over and jump through a lot more hoops than I am!
4. It's my "hook" -- it helps me to make sure homework is done and grades are kept up.
Does anyone else have a sports fanatic? Am I insane and justifying reasons...or do others do things the same way? |
