Baby Shower Etiquette

How tacky would it be to put a bug in someone's ear about what we really want and need for our baby? I've been accumulating baby gear for years now (2 miscarriages with many associated shopping trips) and have the bulk of the smaller items we'll need. What we really want are the bigger items like a car seat, a crib mattress and a high chair. How would one slip in a subtle hint that a few big gifts would be much more helpful than 100 little ones?
