my 21 month old son throws him self backwards on the floor...

If my son gets mad he will just fall backwards onto the floor and slam his head into the floor over and over. I know this cant be healthy i mean he does it to the point where there is numerous bumps and brusies and his skull. I feel horrible. My mom says i did it when i was little and the only thing that stopped me was 26 stitches in my head. My son has even knocked himself out on many occasions. HELP!!! please i dont know what to do.
