Hi, I am not pregnant (yet) but have just come out of a lengthy bout with UC. After being hospitalized in September/October 2002 for 2 weeks with a severe attack I struggled with recovery and coming off the prednisone. I got down to 5 mg, and then had a severe flare-up late Dec. 2002 and had to go back up to 30 mg again. In January I consulted with a Dr.that I used to see for preventative medicine/treatments years ago. He is an MD and Homeopathic MD and he put me on a homeopathic remedy, along with FISH OILS, Primrose Oil and some other things. From my understanding the fish oils and the primrose oil are anti-inflammatory. I am down to 5 mg again and doing well. Hope to come off the prednisone completely and get pregnant soon. The other main change I made was in diet. Before this it seemed that nothing made much difference. BUT... this has been significant. Basically,I am off of wheat and dairy -- specifically I am following the "Eat Right for your Type" diet. Otherwise known as the "Blood type diet". (Other so-called "colitis diet" plans/books that I found were very contradictory). Before you pass judgment I suggest you read the book and learn about the theory behind it. It is very interesting, and as an RN it made sense to me. More importantly, it has made a big difference for me. Just 3 days after changing my diet I had no more symptoms of bleeding or diarrhea. The only stool changes I see now seem to be around my period. Does anyone else experience changes related with your cycle? My doc seems to think hormones play a part in the UC, which seems to hold true for me. Last year I was pregnant for 14 weeks and my symptoms completely disappeared and stayed gone for 8 months after my miscarriage. I am currently taking a product called Mega Omega by Ortho Molecular Products (715) 342-9881, 2 gel tabs twice a day. Each contain Marine Triglycerides of 1,365 mg along with some other omega's. Primrose Oil 2 caps of 1,300 mg each at bedtime. Still on the asacol and 5 mg prednisone like I said earlier. Hope this info helps someone, this disease is tricky and I am happy to pass on any info I have to help someone. Best to all who suffer with this.
