I have 5 kids and personally don't spank. However, we have done so occasionally for our 5 year old boy who is very very difficult to handle and very stubborn and rebellious. I think you have to consider for each offense how it should be handled. I personally would only use it for serious offenses, basically willful disobedience. Never for an accident or new situation a child may not have known how to handle. And I would probablly give a warning first, unless it's a situation that arises repeatedly and the child knows better about.

I would say definitely bare bottom. I think that for some kids, a hand would do, the shock would do the trick; but for others who are very willful and implement may be needed. I would not like to see it used severly enough to leave marks, but enough to sting and redden so that they will not forget anytime soon. Basically don't use too much force in the arm. Some men don't know their strength so really focus on that as not to injure.
