Mom feels guilty for going med route

My 7/0 son has always been so free spirited and easy going. When he was a toddler, my husband & I would joke & say we can tell he's going to be the class clown and we will get plenty of calls from school...this has truly happend. He gets D's in conduct and I am constantly getting calls from school. We love our son's happy-go-lucky attitude on life and I am scared that w/the meds, it will change. I can't picture my son "calming" down so much to the point where is personality changes--it scares me. The only reason we're going this route is becuase it is affecting his school work and home life is becoming stressful w/his constant "forgetting". It sometimes comes out as outright defiance. We're never sure how far to punish or if its the ADHD. He is not an out right "bad" kid, he just needs help controlling his actions and behavior. If there is anyone else out there who's heart is breaking because of medication guilt, please let me know I am not alone.
