SUBJECT: Co-Sleeping
Hi I just want to let people know about my experiance and sleepFUL nights. When I had baby number one 10 years ago I breastfed and needed Laleche League , There I checked out a book called the family bed. My Third child , who is three weeks old now shares our bed. With all three of my children (the older two, 10 and 4 are now very independant people :) I started their nights offs after feeding in a cradle next to my bed. Several hours later they would wake for feeding and then came into my bed where they remained the rest of the night with no problems. The idea that you would roll over on your baby is not a legand or myth however in old times (1700) sometimes a family would have too many mouths and since the families all slept in one bed it was an easy excuse for smothering (purposly) a new baby. The very same instint that keeps you on your bed keeps you from rolling on baby. In fact single beds began here in America only in the early 20th centurty prior to that people shared their beds . In the fifties single beds for married people were portrayed and people saw it as fashionable , how many of us sleep alone from our spouse now? Long ago the bigger the bed was a luxury (hence KING SIZE) the more people you could accomodate in one bed the better!
We let our kids stay with us until they were ready to move out all were in their own rooms by two with an ocassional welcome visit at night. By welcoming the kids anytime they knew we are always here for them and became very secure. At about one we would introduce their big beds and always started them off in their own sleeping area. This has been great for us and for anyone who is curious about co-sleeping I would recommend the book "The Family Bed" by Tine Thevenin The kids weaned themselves from nursing (one at 13 months and the other at 14 months) and they have weaned themselves from our bed I am happy to say they are bright and loving children and in no way did their sleeping interrupt time from me and hubby :) Best of luck
