Earrings - what age?

My 6 year old wants earrings, I do not think she is old enough or mature enough, yet all of her friends have them.
My outlook is that you should be able to keep your room clean and take care of your stuff before you can get earrings.
There are a lot of different opinions out there, anyone want to share?
