 | Hello, all.
Our 8-year-old son (second grader) has recently been diagnosed with ADHD. The psychologist is monitoring him for a bit before actually prescribing any meds.
Since the diagnosis, we have been told by the school that we have a choice of either switching him to their "Special Education Classes" or, holding him back in the second grade another year. NOT because of his learning abilities or his grades, however.
Thing is, my son is reading/writing at a 6th grade level, is advanced in math and science as well. The reason WHY the school wants to send him to Special Ed Classes there is because ALL of their students diagnosed with ADD/ADHD attend them...regardless of learning level or capacity. Our son was originally taken to a psychologist because of a lessened ability to focus on the task at hand for very long, and a continued 'getting up and wandering around the classroom, looking for something to do'...
Has this been the experience of other parents of ADHD kids here, as well? I'm approaching my 40th B-day, and I remember volunteering as a teacher's assistant in high school in the Special Ed classes. What haunts me the most is that 20 years ago, special ed in my school was a joke as far as educational value...mostly kids with severe learning disabilites sitting in class and not learning hardly at all. I'm afraid that our son would be put into a similar class structure as this...and just 'give up' on school. He loves learning and (even according to his teachers) is very quick and bright when it comes to class work.
Any/all comments or advise would be appreciated, thanks! |
