I'd say that part of the problem may be the parent's staying too long. It may draw out the sad "good bye" The parent should stay for about 15 minutes, say, " I love you and will be back after you take a nap, eat lunch, and play" one kiss and out the door. Put the child where he can see mommy/daddy leave then provide interesting stimulus (music, game, etc) Key is repetition. Do this the same way every day and he'll get used to it. Let me know how it works! It may take several weeks!
