 | Hello! An ovum refers to the egg. A blighted ovum is an egg that for one reason or another does not develop into a baby. It could be because of a chromosomal abnormality, poor hormone level, poor implantation or a number of other things. The majority of women who experience slight bleeding in early pregnancy are experiencing implantation bleeding. It is caused by the egg implanting or burrowing into the lining of the uterus called the endometrium which causes a tear and thus some bleeding which is perfectly normal. However, alot of miscarriages occur at this precise time because the ovum does not successfully implant itself into the lining or the egg discovers the chromosomal abnormality, etc. and bleeding occurs also. Usually, when a miscarriage is present, the bleeding is more severe, like a normal menstrual period accompanying cramps and the passage of clots. But that is not always the case. In a missed abortion---where the egg does not develop but the body continues the pregnancy as if everything is normal---there may not be any unusual symptoms. I have experienced 5 pregnancies, 2 normal pregnancies, 2 pregnancies with bleeding--1 was a blighted ovum, 1 ended with an 8 1/2 lb. healthy boy. I am now pregnant again and bleeding again. The only difference in the two pregnancies that I bled previously was---the blighted ovum pregnancy I passed alot of blackish and dark brown discharge and gray looking tissue. With the 1 normal pregnancy I had light bleeding with and had a single episode of heavy bleeding in the first trimester but I bled until I was 6 months. I've talked to numerous women that have bled throughout their pregnancies. If you are bleeding but it is not like your normal period, try to rest assured that alot of women experience bleeding around that time in there pregnancy....it is probably just implantation bleeding. I wish you the best of luck!!! Congratulations!!!!! |
