The current thinking is that left handedness is sometimes the result of genetics and sometimes due to other things.

The probability of two left handed parents having a left handed child is higher than that of one left handed parent, and that is higher than no left handed parents.

However, things that happen before birth can also cause left handedness, so the theories go. For example, it's thought that higher levels of testosterone in the pregnant mother can result in left handed children. Also, older mothers have a higher chance of having left handed children, apparently.

See http://duke.usask.ca/~elias/left/ for info on the genetics of handedness. This is a good site for lefty info.
