Won't stay in bed

My 20 1/2 month old will not stay in his bed at night. He's been in a big boy bed since he was 17 months. Unfortunatly, I lay with him when he goes to sleep. He wakes up at least 2 times a night and comes to our bedroom. I take him back to his room and lay with him until he's asleep and he usually wakes again and comes to our room again. This is driving me crazy. I sometimes just put him in our bed which makes for a sleepless night for my husband and I. I sometimes end up falling asleep in my son's bed after taking him back to his bed. I'm not sure what to do about this. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
