Hi. My son will be 5 in May and has had (still working on it) trouble with using the toilet especially with number 2. But this trouble stems from a lot of different things.

My advice is to see the Ped. gastroenterologist. My pediatrician didn't know what to do for us...and ended up wasting valuable time.

James has Constipation/Stool Withholding/Leakage problems ... he has been seen by 3 doctors from Rush to Children's Memorial in Chicago...they all prescribed Miralax. Nothing seemed to work until this year - 2+ years later the meds are finally working.

My son never complained of pain in his stomache. But he was adament not to use the toilet or to go #2. He still is hesitant...

He is also being seen by an ENT...he has major fluid in his ears. No wonder he couldn't tell me if it hurt or when he has to go to the bathroom..he has had fluid in his ears for so long he has missed out on normal development. Not to mention he hears as if he was under water..I am hoping once the fluid clears up he will be able to communicate more effectively on why he has this fear of the toilet.

He also is in a special education program through our school district to help him catch up since his ears have played a roll in his developmental delay.

See a gastroenterologist, check out his ears, and if he seems to not communicate with kids his age and would rather play alone...maybe it's because he has other developmental issues. You are the mom and you know more than the doctors...don't accept push back.

I have a very bright little boy - just some unfortunate obstacles that we need to overcome.
