 | Hi Meg,
The private school my children attend follows the Stanford 9 test. Which is one of the reasons I chose the school. It seems the Arizona public school system as a whole doesn't keep up with the Stanford 9 so Arizona came up with their own test for public schools, the AMES test, with lower standards so the public schools can keep up with scores. Public schools still take the Stanford 9, but do not need to keep up with the average scores to keep their funding going, only the AMES test. So they post the scores of all the schools online and the one my daughter went to (only for kindergarten) was in the 20 and 30 percent scores. I thought that was ridiculous and immediately started looking for a private school. And even only going to kindergarten in public school, my daughter had to be tutored in math over the summer to pass the Stanford 9 test in order to get into the private school. I'm not certain, statistically, whether the frequent breaks help, I'm not sure what the public schools here do for recess, my daughter was in half-day kindergarten, so with lunch time, they were only in school for a little over two hours a day anyway. But personally, I surely believe they need frequent breaks. Even myself, as an adult at work, I can't concentrate and stay focused if I can't get away for even a few minutes a couple of time a day. I can only imagine it would be worse for children with shorter attention spans. I don't know if this has helped you at all.....but it's my take on the whole situation. Angie |
