Thank you for your response. From the people I have heard from it seems things are different everywhere. When I question my 4th-graders teacher about recess I'm told that they don't have time because of End-of-grade test prep. There's so much to cover. The principal has concurred that the upper elementary grades generally do not go out to play on a regular basis, and he does NOT seem to be disturbed by that. But I sure am. If local and national governments continue to raise the academic bar for student achievement I fear we are going to have a nation of kids who hate school because they're forced to endure conditions that fail to nurture the whole child. Recess is important for developing social skills, something that can't be overlooked in importance for success in life, and also helps burn off excess energy which all kids naturally have, and helps instill an enjoyment for physical fitness for the fun of it. Lets face it, everyday I hear on the news more reports of childhood obesity and resulting illnesses. Taking away recess, and in some cases P.E., just does not make sense. Any suggestions on what to do now? Meg
