My 2nd grade daughter gets a 20min silent lunch and a 10min recess each day. Which is not enough in my opinion, even working adults get longer breaks than that. The reason for the short recess and lunch is the school is very crowded and they say scheduling time for that would extend well into the afternoon. My daughter's school is kindergarten through 2nd grade yet still crowded. Next year it will be worse when the kinders go all day 8:55 to 3:35. I live in suburban Chicago and the school dist. next to mine gives its elementary children (K-5th) two 10min recesses and one 15min recess after lunch, yet they are ranked one of the best school districts in Illinois.
