| Very interesting, and it's actually been part of my repertoire the past week. I sought out the advice of a child psychologist and was told to encourage my son to use his words when he has anger outbursts, combining it with time out. Instead, I developed my own approach which incorporates her advice and after literally trying everything - I think I may be on to something that actually works! I've given up on time outs, putting him in his room, yelling, and taking toys and priveledges away - none of which worked. Instead, when my son first starts to tantrum, I firmly say "Take Control - Use Your Words" and drop the issue. I've showed him that when he gets angry, he needs to fold his arms criss/cross on his chest to give himself a hug. Well, much to my AMAZEMENT, it seems to be working. For the first time in 6 months I've had 5 days without a major incident, and his teachers have told me they've seen improvement in school (he was hitting and kicking them as well). Although he won't "Take Control" in the middle of a major tantrum, I've noticed him hugging himself and saying "I'm Mad" before he gets to a major tantrum, without my involvement. In addition, when I tell him "Take Control" and move on to something else, he actually STOPS! I've also delivered a lot of praise and we practice taking control once a day when everything is calm. Needless to say I'm optimistic but won't know the long-term effects of my approach until months from now. However, it's the first time a discipline tactic has worked in my home, and I thought I would share in case there are some others at wit's end. |
