| Hello everyone,
There is a researcher in Australia who has a very different approach to discipline. She claims her method works, while the traditional punishment and modern praise and reward systems do not, and she has experimental data to demonstrate this.
Her approach is based on the premise that children are not having problems with learning and understanding rules, but have trouble controlling the impulse to break rules. The technique is, as soon as the child starts displaying bad behaviour, to sit down with the child, put an arm around them and try to help them regain control over their behaviour. And instead of praise for the child (i.e. "good girl"), you praise (or criticise) the behaviour (that was a good thing to do). Rewarding children only teaches them to seek approval from others in charge, rather than considering the effects of their behaviour on others. Anyway, this might work for someone. It works well for my five year old - I'm still trying to work out how to make it work for my three year old.
By all means, if you have access to a psychologist and you have a problem child, you might as well try. |
