SUBJECT: Grade 1 math
Hi - my stepdaughter brought home a note from school the other day asking us to work on some math homework with her, as she had been having troubles with it at school. No problem, we thought, until we saw what she was expected to do.

Only 2 months before, the students had been learning how to count (she's in a 2nd language program so counting in a new language is new to most of the kids), how to write the numbers, etc. However now they are counting by 10s (which is ok I suppose) but they are also expected to understand how to add and subtract 10 from any number between 1-100. For example, complete the following line: 42, 52, ___, ___. OR the reverse 74, 64, ___, ___, etc.

Okay, so we get Erin to understand somewhat how to do this on one page, and flip to the next to do some more exercises and we find questions like the following:

17 + 10 + 10 - 10 + 10 - 10 = _____

In grade 1!!! The kids are 6 years old! Whatever happened to 2+2=4??? Does anyone else there think this is crazy? Can anyone else let me know what their children are learning in Grade 1 Math to give me an idea if our school system is a little out-to-lunch. We hope to get a meeting with the teacher this week before Christmas break, but any other input in the meantime would be great. Thanks!
