SUBJECT: Does your child get recess at school?
I need to know if your elementary aged child has recess at school and what your opinion is regarding it. It seems in Henderson County, North Carolina we a seeing a shift from nurturing the whole child to academics only. My son attends a NC School of Excellence but hasn't had recess since the second grade (he's in fourth now) and works on homework nearly 2 hours per night. He is beginning to hate school, has made up his mind that college is out of the question, and I can't say as I blame him. Because they don't have recess, punishments consist of "silent lunch" or missed specials like gym, art, music or computer lab. This change had seemed to evolve since the initiation of the ABCs of Education, where teachers are awarded bonuses based on student performance on end-of-grade testing in reading and math. I fear with the "no child left behind" act, that more children may be facing these conditions. Please let me know what is going on in your community and if you are for or against recess. I believe that play is an important part of a child's growth and development, both physically and psychologically, and to remove it from schools could have damaging effects on a generation of children.
