OK- I have a successful pregnancy story! Don't give up hope! :) I am 38 and just delivered my third child seven weeks ago. I had the symptoms of UC during my first two pregnancies, but was diagnosed as simply having "internal hemmoroids". After my second child, my flares became more severe, and was diagnosed with UC three years ago. I had a really bad flare two years ago, was on cyclosporine and major doses of imuran and prednisone, and almost had a colectomy after a 3-week hospital stay. It was really tempting at the time to have the colectomy so I could be free of the UC for good, but knew I wanted to have another child down the road and for some reason I was worried about not having a colon interfering with that (even though my doctor assured me that you can still have a successful pregancy without a colon). When I went in to remission (about six months later), I stopped the imuran and prednisone and waited a few months before "trying". After I became pregnant, I stopped the asacol as well, and only took it when I started to bleed again. The flare was very short, luckily, and I finished the pregnancy on asacol. That was seven weeks ago, and I'm breastfeeding now. I just went into a pretty bad flare a week ago, and am afraid I'll have to stop breastfeeding, and came on to this site seeking advice from those who have tried to breastfeed with UC as I've since heard it can cause a flare. Overall, it was a great pregnancy, and the UC did not interfere since I was in remission. Breastfeeding is not going as well, so if you have any suggestions or stories, I'd love to hear them - thanks!
