SUBJECT: Should kids have recess at school?
I have a fourth grade student who has not had recess since the second grade. It seems since our state (NC) has instituted the ABCs of public education the focus has been on academics and test scores. In order to "make the grade" they no longer have time for recess. In fact, in a classroom where I have substituted, the teacher wrote me a note saying, "We do not have recess in 3rd grade". Adults in the workforce are guaranteed by law to have at least two 15 minute breaks each day in addition to lunch, right? Shouldn't children have breaks in their work day as well. With children becoming more and more sedentary, time to run and play should be part of a child's day. I always thought that recess was also an important part of learning social skills. Please let me know if this is happening at your school. In addition to no recess, the children at my sons school must endure "silent lunch" as part of discipline and have 2 hours of homework each night (weekends included) in the 4th grade. I need to know if this is wrong or right and what to do about it. Meg
