Well, looks like you stirred up a hornet's nest with this post. I just had to comment. I do agree with you that you should never belittle a child, hit them with shoes or any objects, and to give them love and respect. But, I do whole heartedly believe in spankings. Not hard. And, never ever to hurt or out of anger. My daughter is 18 months old. She tries to bite, hit, and kick. She's too young for time outs and I don't put her in her crib or playpen when it happens because I don't want her to associate those places as "punishment". But, I do say "no" firmly. When she does it again I say "No that hurts. No biting". When she does it a third time she gets her hands smacked for it. I never hurt her. She never cries. But, she quits biting. It may take days for her to do it again. I know so many people who never spank. Their kids usually (but honestly not always) are hellions. Pure terrors. And I know people who spank too much and their kids are just as bad. YOu have to decide when is the right time to spank and when isn't the right time. And, always do it with control. Spanking DOES NOT cause violence or makes them think it's ok to lose control (not unless they're abused that is) or teaches them to be disrespectful. It does just the opposite. It gets their attention quick. They realize they did something wrong and not to do it again and it teaches them to be respectful. I think it makes them much better acting. I have seen that crap about spanking causing those things a lot lately on message boards. I just do it my way and let them do it there way. Hopefully my daughter will be the better for it. I think she already is.
